CORRECTION: Susannah Maxwell died on February 11, 1923 at the age of 117, just under a month short of her 118th birthday.

Walk with us through the story of Susannah Maxwell, a former Richmond Hill resident who narrowly escaped being sold into slavery in the 1860s.

At the time of her death in 1923, was not only Richmond Hill’s oldest resident, but perhaps the oldest in all of Canada. She reached the unbelievable age of 117.

Born to free black parents in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Susannah and her husband narrowly escaped being kidnapped and sold into slavery in the early 1860s. In 1861, they fled to Upper Canada and eventually settled in Richmond Hill. Mrs. Maxwell lived out her life in a brick tenement on the east side of Yonge Street at the south end of the Village. This was located almost directly across from St. Mary’s Anglican Church in the spot where there now sits a parking lot.

Her home was eventually acquired by Matilda Maxwell, or Tillie as she was known, in 1911. Her and Susannah had already been running a home-laundry business at this site for a number of years before this.

Susannah was a member of the congregation of the Presbyterian Church, which hosted a centenary party on the occasion of her 100th birthday. It was a well-attended reception where she was presented with a gift of one hundred dollars by the Villagers.
